Kendall Institute organizes international seminars and workshops targeting social work professionals from across the globe on various global topics. Topics prioritized include disaster management and risk reduction, global migration, human rights, poverty, globalization, and immigrants and refugees.

Partnerships.

The more social workers around the globe share ideas and different perspectives, the better prepared educators and practitioners will be. The Institute inaugurated its partnerships initiative at the 2007 Disaster Planning, Management, and Relief Seminar in Barbados. Social work educators from all continents—including representatives from the International Red Cross, United Nations, and IASSW—met to discuss disaster management and risk reduction for today, tomorrow, and in the future. Another area of immediate focus for the Institute is global migration, which is having a profound effect on social transformation and on developing nations. The Institute sees its partnerships with other likeminded organizations as invaluable in increasing economic, social, and environmental stability, particularly in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

International Fellowship Program

Through the Institute’s International Fellowship Program, social work faculty are selected from across the globe to conduct a special project aligned with CSWE’s priorities. International Fellows also lecture as visiting scholars. Fellows are selected based on their demonstrated excellence in international social work scholarship and their ability to deliver new ideas in educational settings in the United States and abroad. The typical tenure for International Fellows is 3–6 months, and applications are due in April for the following year.

A Clearinghouse for Information:

Your International Social Work Education Library

Serving as a repository of information in the field of international social work is a key component of the Katherine A. Kendall Institute. Its staff maintains an extensive database of curriculum resources, study abroad programs, ongoing international conferences, seminars and workshops in the United States and abroad, and other timely and relevant information. The Institute also documents the findings and solutions presented at events held in progressive partnership with other international social work organizations. A key example is a bibliography and conference proceedings for international education and disaster management for social work education. These and other publications are available online.

Syllabi for International Social Work Education

To encourage the infusion of international issues into the social work curriculum, the Katherine A. Kendall Institute compiles effective syllabi previously and currently being used by social work faculty in their classrooms. All educators seeking to “internationalize” their curricula are encouraged to visit CSWE’s Web site to download these free resources.

a CSWE‘s initiative KENDALL KATHERINE ANNE TUACH KENDALL (Age 100) An iconic figure in international social work education died December 1, 2010; Katherine A.
